Your tummy hurts. You have a terrible headache.
You can’t sleep and you’re cranky.
One more thing: you can’t ask for help because
you’re only two weeks old! So you cry. And cry. And cry.
The most widely accepted definition of colic today is
“unexplainable and uncontrollable crying in babies from
0 to 3 months old, more than 3 hours a day, more than
3 days a week for 3 weeks or more, usually in the
afternoon and evening hours.”
Chiropractic and Colic
Upon examination of a colicky baby, we often find spinal distortions in the baby’s upper cervical spine. This is especially common if there was a difficult birth. However, even a ‘normal’ birth can be stressful on a baby’s delicate nervous system. When there is a spinal dysfunction in a baby, it can cause the ‘fight or flight’ portion of their nervous system to be elevated. This can cause distress in a baby whose primary focus should be on their ‘rest and digest’ portion of their nervous system.
Pediatric chiropractors are trained to identify and remove dysfunction with a safe, gentle and effective strategy to reduce symptoms of infantile colic. Additionally, our practice can provide you with advice on nutrition, at-home techniques and ergonomics to support your child’s growing body.
The results of a randomized controlled trial published in the October 1999 issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiologic Therapeutics tracked a small group of 50 infants. Half received the drug dimethicone and the other spinal manipulation. At the conclusion of the two-week study, the babies being adjusted saw a 67% reduction in crying and the drug therapy group saw a 38% reduction.
Not a Cure
Chiropractic isn’t a treatment for colic! If spinal
distortion is present, interfering with the proper
function of any part of the body, restoring proper
nervous system control often allows the body to heal.
This may happen regardless of age and regardless of
what the particular symptoms are called.
What People Are Saying
‘I first brought my 3-week-old baby into Pearl Street Chiropractic for symptoms of colic. I had heard that chiropractic care for infants was incredibly gentle and PSC was recommended to me by a trusted provider. I immediately felt comfortable on my first visit as I saw many other moms and children throughout the family-friendly office. Dr. Micaela took time to discuss my pregnancy, birth and first few weeks with my LO and clearly explained to me what to expect. After my initial visit, my LO immediately seemed to relax, I’m not sure how else to put it. Her body seemed less tense and she slept like a log! Since coming in for regular check-ups, my LO has been calmer, more relaxed and sleeping better! I have learned so much about the connection of the nervous system to our health and well-being. Dr. Micaela is a baby-whisperer!’
